Shade-Grown refers to coffees grown on traditional coffee farms, whose canopies of diverse native tree species have been shown to offer habitat for migratory songbirds. Criteria for “Bird-Friendly” coffees were drafted by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, which oversees and administers the program. This is a biodiversity certification, where birds are a surrogate for broader conservation goals. All of our organic coffees are Shade-Grown, the Costa Rican, Mexican and Peruvian are also SMBC-certified Bird-Friendly. |
